Are you, like me, becoming increasingly concerned about the fact that many of our children eat very little “real” food? There is more and more processed and ready to eat out of the package food available today, so much that some kids, and more than we want to believe I think, have little contact with real food, made with fresh ingredients.

Hellmann’s conducted a national survey and according to the results, Canadian families are eager to eat more real food. However, although 92 per cent of Canadians with kids feel that consuming real food is important, only six per cent are making all of their meals using only real food.* No matter what your age, that is a HUGE change from when any of us grew up. The concern is, how this is going to affect the future of our children in terms of their health and longevity.

Hellmann’s is committed to making it easier for Canadians and their families to enjoy the pleasure of real food. As a result, they are providing $100,000 in Real Food Grants to support initiatives that bring Canadian families and kids together with real food in their community.

The good news is that families and community organizations across Canada can take part in this initiative and help promote healthy eating for kids and you can get a grant from Hellmann’s to help do it. Here’s how -

Eligible Programs & Who Can Apply

Hellmann’s Real Food Grants will fund projects that take place in Canada in 2010. Their priority is to support programs or projects with tangible results that connect Canadians and their families to real food versus submissions without specific outcomes.

To be eligible, an initiative must achieve one of these goals:

Educate Canadian families and kids about real food

Connect Canadian families and kids with real food through an experience or event

The following groups* can apply:

School based groups

Community groups

Families

*All groups must create a community event or experience that involves kids.

Hellmann’s Real Food Grants Ideas:

Grant ideas could be small initiatives such as:

A Canadian family hosting a real food picnic

Organizing a real food lunch week for a classroom or school

A group / class trip to experience real food. For example: a farmer’s market, a bakery, cheese, meat, fish shop, etc.

Or larger initiatives such as:

Starting a community based garden or greenhouse

Organizing a community real food festival or event

Starting an in-school real food lunch program

The Grant Application Process:

Hellmann’s Real Food Grants applications will be accepted between April 7, 2010 and June 30, 2010. Applications will be evaluated on an on-going basis. To apply, please fill out the submission form located online online at RealFoodMovement.ca.

So get going creative thinking families and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to help people to start thinking of real food!

We can do this.

* Hellmann’s Real Food survey was conducted by Ipsos Canadian Online Omnibus for Hellmann’s. Data was collected via an online poll between February 11-14, 2010 from more than 1,000 Canadians ages 18 and older. For the purposes of the survey, and our Real Food Grants Program ‘real food’ is defined as authentic food that is made with simple, natural ingredients; and ‘Canadians with kids’ are defined as ‘Canadians with kids under 18 in the household.’ Survey data is statistically accurate +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

A full-spectrum nutritional cookbook with a startling message–animal fats and cholesterol are vital factors in the human diet, necessary for reproduction and normal growth, proper function of the brain and nervous system, protection from disease and optimum energy levels. Includes information on how to prepare grains, health benefits of bone broths and enzyme-rich lacto-fermented foods.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars must have!!
This cookbook is a must have. I learned so much about how foods are supposed to be prepared, that I had never even heard of before. This is phenomenal resource for learning about the body and how it actually uses natural fats and how they are good for you. This is a must read. I take it with me everywhere and read a little at a time. It seems there is more to learn on every page.

5 Stars More than a cookbook
More than a cookbook–more like an encyclopedia. Provides great recipes, plus additional information, such as sources of products. Detailed explanation of nutritional aspects makes the book educational. Comprehensive indices make finding things easy.

1 Star Can’t be trusted
I cannot believe or trust an author beginning with the premise that one’s body requires animal fats (an absolute falsehood). Given that major error, everything that follows in this book is suspect.

5 Stars Best book ever written
This book is so informative I have bought it for my son and his wife, everyone needs to know the value of food. Sally and Mary have put in so much detail about the benefits of good wholesome foods. I now make my own Kefir, lacto fermented veges, broths and much more. My book is marked with a high light pen as well as flags, as there is so much to look back on and re read or find a page quickly to tell someone else the good news.

5 Stars nourishing for the mind
This is an incredible book for anyone that wants to get back to the basics. A real eye opener of how things used to be. great information great recipies.

5 Stars South Beach Quick & Easy
This book is excellent – I now have four South Beach Diet Cookbooks and this is by far the best, easiest, and quickest recipes. Everything I have tried has been easy to follow and yummy.

5 Stars This makes it easy
This cookbook provided lots of easy recipes for all phases of the South Beach Diet. They were not only quick and easy, but very flavorful. They helped us to stay on the diet and not feel deprived.

5 Stars Wonderful
Wonderful recipes. Great way to continue the South Beach Diet. Lots of choices to choose from. This book helps my husband and I to not be bored on our diet.

5 Stars very good
this book was described as very good condition with a page corner turned and it came in just that description. it arrived in less than 2 weeks and has a lot of fast and simple recipes. thank you.

5 Stars This is actually working for me!
I decided to try a diet for the first time in my life when I lost the baby weight I had put on, then gained it all back by the time my son was 8 months old. Also, I have been trying to feed my son healthy foods, and noticed that I was often not eating healthy food myself. My father in law had sucess with his diet the year before, so I thought I would try it. So far I have lost 27 pounds in 5 months (11 lbs. in the first 2 weeks), and generally loose one pound a week, even when I feel I have strayed (like at a party or wedding). I already lost the weight I had put on, and am continuing with it to get down to a healthier weight for myself. Plus, now I can fit back into my jeans that I had packed away even beore I got pregnant. Once I got used to the food guidelines, I have found it easy to stay on track, and can alter many of our usual meals to fit the guidelines. I see this as a change in the way I eat, not just a way to loose some weight, then gain it back again.

At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America’s most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)–one of the leading medical centers–to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices–the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book’s 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there’s no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker’s Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses–invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

5 Stars 123 Cookbook
I am extremely happy with this transaction. It was delivered earlier than promised and in excellent shape.

5 Stars Finally a cookbook for diabetics that calls for “real” ingredients!
Most cookbooks I’ve seen for diabetics call for all sorts of “fake” ingredients that I find totally unappetizing. This book, however, uses mostly “real” ingredients and has recipes that the whole family can enjoy. One of the horrifying things about being a diabetic is being “different”, having to eat “different” foods and substitutes for the real thing. The recipes in this book sound really appetizing and the pictures make me want to run to the market so that I can start cooking. There are even dessert items like Double-Berry Muffins that don’t call for any strange ingredients. It even gives you a choice of using a real egg or a fat-free, cholesterol-free egg product if you have a cholesterol problem. I admit I haven’t read ALL the recipes yet, but of all the ones I HAVE read, the ingredients are readily available in regular supermarkets. No special trips to the health food store required. I would highly recommend this cookbook for diabetic who, like me, don’t like to feel deprived and don’t like to eat a lot of fake ingredients. (They give me gastric problems!)

5 Stars Great starter cookbook for newly diagnosed diabetic!
Wonderful hardcover cookbook. Very useful information not found in any of the other diabetic cookbooks. Great recipes and I really like the illustrations. We’re making the caramel cheesecake for Thanksgiving. Easy 1,2,3 system to track carb levels.

5 Stars Love this book!
I have several diabetic cookbooks and this is my favorite. I love the double berry muffins! My husband is thrilled with his new diabetic options. Easy to follow and well organized.

4 Stars Good for a teen
This proved to be a good choice for a teen whose mother had recently been diagnosed as diabetic. It got used.

5 Stars Good for families.
I had bought the other Biggest Loser cookbook but the problem with those recipes was it was for about one person at a time. This one is different in that it can feed more than one person–a family–and you get low cal, delicious recipes. The meals seem very nutritious and by eating this, a person would probably lose the weight–but you can’t snack too much! All in all, this is a gret recipe book for those who want to feed their families good, nutritious foods. I also liked and would recommend, for dieting: Fatass No More! How I Lost Weight and Still Ate Cheeseburgers and Fries.
